Subject: Need some help with some strange chisels.

Hello all,
I was at a flea market about a year ago and found some strange chisels or punches. They are made for hand use, 9"long and have different shaped, tapered cutting ends as well as being bent about 3" from the cutting edge. The stamped marking on one of them reads(Hargrave 7/8 243) and (Made In USA). The others have different numbers after the word Hargrave. I thought from the shape that they were possibly stone working tools but am not sure. There are rounds, half rounds and what a jeweler would call lozenges in different sizes. They weigh about 2lbs each. I bought the ten for $10. The vendor just wanted to get rid of them because he didn't know what they were for. They have never been used.

I Googled for "Hargrave" and only came up with some clamps by a Hargrave tools. No Chisels. This is why I hope that some one could help me out. I could send a picture offlist to some one that might know more about this.

My questions before using them on stone are.

Are they good for granite?
What were they really intended for?
Are they hardened?

Showed a few to an old guy at work and he has other shapes at home for me. He doesn't know what they're for either.

I'm stumped.

John Klassen
