Working Large Blocks
Hello Everyone,
I usually work in marble and alabaster (sometimes soapstone) stones weighing
under 200 pounds. I use power tools mostly. Air hammers, grinders, diamond
saws, hammer drills, etc.
For the first time I am venturing into a big block - 750lbs. I am
interested in your thoughts on thing to consider when carving larger blocks.
Specifically:
Should I still use sandbags? It seems I will not need them to position the
stone and I question their shock absorption value on a piece this large.
Do ball bearing rotary wheels (industrial turntables) help or hinder getting
around the work? I am working in a small area. If they do help, how do you
use them properly (place stone on directly or use plywood in between or)?
The type I am considering can be seen at this web page :

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you for your help.
