Subject:
What would you want in a stone sculpting class?
I love this question and I hope everyone responds on line because I would
really like to see the answers. I teach beginning carving at the Colorado Center
for the Blind. My students are always new since they are only at the center
for an average six month program and art is an elective class. I start out
with hand tools and an explanation of how they are used. A trip to Fort Collins
to pick out stone and a class from Stan about how to choose sound stone. We
usually take a field trip to the Museum of Outdoor Arts, in Englewood or
Benson Park, in Loveland where we can get in touch with sculptures.
The students are then encouraged to make a sculpture with a flat surface,
a concave, a convex and a hole. The only power tools we use in class is a
drill but I do take them to my studio at some point and let them try out
pneumatic chisels, die grinders and sanding disks.
That is where we start.
