Subject: FINALLY! The secret to being a successful artist/sculptor

Hi Bob,

A larger drum for for your rock tumbler would help,
but the other half of the equation is to make things
the folks can recognize (at least that is the way the
market is here in Atlanta).

Representational, animals, florals, nudes, and of
course portraits . . . those all are much better sellers
than abstract. Most of the general public (whether they have
money or not) trust their own judgement if it (the artwork)
obviously looks like something, but most don't trust their
judgement when it is non-representational.

But you also have to do them more quickly than I can,
or work for minimum wage!

It all comes down to the exceptions rather than the rule -
the buyers for my work tend to be iconoclasts who:

1. can afford it
2. are broad-minded and open to new things
3. knows what they like and trust their own judgement
4. happens to be in the right place at the right time

If any of those doesn't describe a potential client, I am
not making a sale (though I have been know to work
out lay-away and similar plans for clients lacking #1).

Still Carving,
Don
