Homemade Chisels
Hello,
I did a sort of "How To" set of photos for making the chisels. You can view it at
http://public.fotki.com/JohnKlassen/
along with a some pics of a fun pendant that I made for a jewelery arts contest.
Sorry, no action photos, haven't mastered taking a picture and using a torch at the same time. I'm not much of a photographer anyways.
I forgot to mention that any local machine shop is going to have lots of used carbide cutter bits lying around. Usually they toss them in the garbage. Just tell them that you want to solder them and what you're doing, they'll probably give them to you. They could probably give you tips on the soldering as well.
Good Luck to anybody willing to give it a go.
It's been fun for me and I have four chisels to show for it. We'll see how they hold up.
A while ago one of the ladies on the list wrote something about scrounging. Well, I don't see any problem with that. There is a whole lot to learn in trying to make something out of a piece of material that has been discarded. Actually, my sculpture "Infirmity", with the exception of the opal, is made of scraps and discards.
Have to get working on my next disasterpiece.
John
