Subject: [stone] Cutting thin slabs of stone

Quoted text begins.I'd like to cut some 1"-2" thick slabs of alabastor (18"x24"x1"-2").
Drilling and separating cause me to lose as much stone as what I am
getting, not to mention the time involved to get the two surfaces flat
and even. I have cut alabastor on a large bandsaw, but it trashed the
blade and was impossible to control very well. Any suggestions on how
to cut thin slabs of stone?
End of quote.

Are you trying to make the slabs thinner? or trying to cut the
18 x 24 into smaller pieces. If it's the former, than the band
saw is probably your best bet, but I imagine you will have more
breakage than sucessful cuts. Try finding a diamond coated wire
or blade for your bandsaw, and rig up a water drip og some sort.
If you are just trying to cut through the 1 - 2 inch thickness,
than a circular saw with either a carborundum (fiber) masonry
blade or a diamond blade made for soft stone ( see the thread
about saw blades) should do the trick.
