Edge finishing slate
About that ruffled edge on a slate roofing tile (or shingle):
Roofers have a couple of tools to use. One is a blade on a hinge, much
like a paper cutter. I bought one years ago from Evergreen Slate
Company in Vermont. It doesn't take a lot of strength to cut through a
standard roofing shingle and you can get pretty fancy with the curves.
I cut one into the shape of the state of Maine, to be later turned into
a clock face. I think the roofers have a hammer with an extension blade
on it, that they use to trim a small section of a shingle too. Perhaps
someone else knows the "real" names for these tools. I've called them
"slate cutter" and "roofer's hammer."
Good luck with your project. I hope this helps you find what you need
for working with slate.
