Hi and a Boulder splitting question
Quoted text begins.Has anybody explored stuff called "silent explosives", I believe it is used
extensively for splitting boulders that get in the way of foundations.
Evidently they just drill holes and pack them full of this stuff, go away
while it does its thing and low and behold the rock is split!.
I think it works by slowly expanding sideways in the hole.
End of quote.
Clive,
I have used a splitting cement called 'Katrok'- unsuccessfully! I didn't drill
the holes deep or wide enough as was recommended.
I believe it is simply quicklime mixed with alumina powder. The addition of
water creates heat to start a chemical reaction with the aluminium, which sets
up a tremendous expansive force.
Silent alright if you discount the noise of the drilling beforehand!
I can send the name of a supplier in Qld.
