Quoted text begins. The dispatcher at the rock yard said the slate I bought, "comes from
Arizona... I think." When I asked him what kind of slate it was, he
said, "It's the really hard, rocky kind!" Well, at least we had a
good laugh.
End of quote.

Hi Ted. I'm a bit curious about what kind of slate comes out of
Arizona also.
It's not a place I associate slate with. Best in this country
is from up in the Northeast --Vermont, NewYork, Pa etc. Quite a
bit of "slate " is being imported from India and China
now --usually can find it in tile form at some of the big box
home stores. I use the term slate rather loosely for some of
this stone as it has not really gone through the complete
metamorpic process, and is really just a dry, well compacted mud,
and there are horror stories of people using it in showers only
to watch it wash down the drain once it gets wet. ( Oh well,
off topic--sorry about that).
Mostly the patio stone from Arizona that I'm familiar with is
some real hard sandstone. Red, Pink, and buff colors. From my
experience with these stones, I sure would not want to use them
for my first lettering attempts. Not saying that there isn't any
slate coming out of AZ, just not familiar with it if it is, and
I don't think the geology is right for it's formation. I know
that attachments are verboten on this list, but if you can
e-mail me a picture of the stone you are using, I'd like to take
a look at it. Get my address from my web site.
