Ted and John,
I agree with John that Arizona is an unlikely source of slate. But I
wonder if you just mixed up an A-state. There's slate in Arkansas.
Maybe that's where yours came from, Ted.
The softest slate for carving is in Pennsylvania (they also have a hard
version.) Slates from Vermont make nice plaques, some even in layers of
color. Good luck with your carving, Ted. You were right about the
spacing of letters having a great effect on the final product.
