But wait, there's more: ( lettercutting/carving books)

"Schrift + Symbol in Stein, Holz und Metall" by Sepp Jakob (translation:
"Letter and Symbol in Stone, Wood and Metal")

This book is written in German and is mainly about lettering and carving in
stone. The hundreds of photos and diagrams are what makes this book
worthwhile for a lettercutter who does not speak German. Fine examples of
raised and incised lettering.

"Lettering in Stone" by Harold Crossley

An excellent book (from the UK) which seems geared toward the monumental
mason. Has many photos and diagrams and even a section on sandblasting
letters (yuck)...

"The Art of Remembering"

This book accompanied a 1998 UK exhibition of works by members of Memorials
by Artists ( http://www.memorialsbyartists.co.uk/). Some fine works by
artists such as Richard Kindersley, Tom Perkins, and others. Lots of
photos.

"Modern Scribes and Lettering Artists"

This is a book of photos, the last one third of which is inscriptional
lettering, mainly in stone. Artists such as David and Richard Kindersley,
John Skelton, and others are featured.

"And The Word Was Made Stone" by Tom Perkins

Works by lettercutter and designer Tom Perkins. Lots of photos. Note: Tom
is putting together an instructional lettercutting book, which may be
accompanied by a DVD, that is supposed to be released later this year.

"David Kindersley, His Work and Workshop" by Montague Shaw

Pretty much a biography of David Kindersley which includes many photos of
his work. Includes photos of lettering layouts on paper and info. on Eric
Gill as well.

"Creative Lettering Today" by Michael Harvey

The last one fourth of this book is a tutorial on cutting letters into
stone and wood. Many closeup photos to illustrate technique. Most of this
books involves design and layout.

Well, this partial list is "must have" for anyone contemplating hand
lettercutting as a component of their stone carving. Many of these books
are out-of-print but can be found through www.bookfinder.com. There are
more books on this subject including dozens on the topic of American/New
England gravestones. I can list them if anyone is interested.
