Raised lead lettering
Pete, thanks for the information about raised lead lettering and your kind offer
to send copies of the pages.
I wouldn't ask you to breach copyright when the book is available - I have
ordered a copy from the UK for nineteen pounds fifty. I've posted some of my own
You and any others are welcome to post whatever you consider suitable or just
browse the images at the site.
Harold Crossley's advice will be invaluable because I have never seen this work
undertaken. The only raised lead lettering technique I have read about describes
pouring molten lead over the stone and then cutting the excess off with a sharp
chisel. I have tried this and know it to be incorrect. It's not practical for
adding or repairing letters to a vertical surface. Also, I don't like the idea
of heating lead and being exposed to lead monoxide vapour and splashes of molten
lead.
