Raised lead lettering
Quoted text begins. It's seems that there is an way of telling how old a monument is by
measuring how eroded the stone is next to the lead lettering.
End of quote.
Or it can be used to measure how much hydrochloric acid has been poured over it
by well-meaning but destructive restorers! I've seen it happen- the monument
looks great for a short while, then turns blacker than before. Then the lead
letters fall out.
John, thanks for the link.
