Raised Lead Lettering
Actually, according to Harold Crossley's book, "Lettering In Stone", you
take squares of lead which have been cut from a sheet about 3/16" thick and
are slightly larger than the letter you intend to cut. You lay that square
of lead over top of the letters' outline on the stone. Previously, you
have drilled shallow (1/8" to 3/16" deep) holes within that outline. You
then beat that piece of lead carefully with a ballpeen hammer, causing the
malleable lead to fill the holes and anchor the lead (NOTE: this part of
the process will crack a thin or fissured stone). The final part is
rescribing the letter onto the lead and cutting it out with special "lead
paring chisels" including curved gouges (you could probably use wood
carving tools for this part). The finished product is a raised lead letter
that stands proud of the stone surface by about 1/16".
Crossley does mention a job using precast lead letters with short posts to
avoid breaking a thin stone tablet. The post positions were marked on the
stone after dipping them in paint. The holes were drilled and the letters
tapped into place. This was a once-only custom job.
In a previous post I offered to scan the appropriate pages in Crossley's
book and send them to anybody interested. I must rescind that offer
because, as Simon pointed out, I would be in violation of copyright laws.
I just assumed that since the book is out of print the publisher wouldn't
mind my spreading the information. Oh well...
Cheers, Pete

the
pegs were slightly longer than the depth of the holes, causing the pegs
to
expand when driven in?
