Norman and all, I cannot help but chime in on this post, as I am
familiar with this specific text and, like you a scientist/amateur
artist. Being an actual *scientist-in-training*, I have often felt a
resonance with science and art that defies the left brain/right brain
classification system. I consider both science and art continuations of
one another which follows a non-Euclidean space. In other words, these
are two endeavors that at some initial level may start out heading in
opposite directions, but end up running right into one another as they
follow the curved nature(s) of the universe.
For instance, I have been considering what it is to be successful as a
scientist (i.e.paradigm-shifter) and as an artist (from a philosophical
perspective and historical examples). It seems that both have the same
skill-requirements: intense interest in all things (i.e. genuine
curiosity), ability to understand the specific problems at hand,
creative ways of dealing with those problems, ethic of hard work and a
tenacious spirit, et cetera. In essence, if I may quote again, both
scientists and artists must "take those things which we call commonplace
and *re-present* them to us in such ways that our self-imposed
limitations are expanded." That is the universal challenge for all
persons who approach their work with the intent to make a difference in
what others know, what others feel, and/or how we humans interact with
and perceive the universe.
Just a few of my random thoughts....
