relief carving
I do quite a bit of bas relief in stone and have found that the best and
quickest way for me to reach the end goal is to sandblast out the background areas
and set the basic outlines. This creates a flat negative space, one of the
hardest parts of carving bas relief. If you want a contoured background it is
easy to carve that in once you have the void created. I have found it just
saves hours and hours of labor and removes none of the creativity. Ann
