I was going to ask you which one? Brancusi's studio is maintained in Paris
and I hope they didnt sell the one out of there. There is an old rumour in
the trade (cf Sidney Geist, Brancusi: a study of the sculpture, 1968) that
he inserted a rod in some of the birds to keep the marble from breaking, as
the stone gets very thin. The insertion must have been quite a feat (think
of that, Barry X!)
Notice the pedestals (or bases) for the pieces. It seems to me they are
fairly roughly finished, in contrast (or opposition) to the extremely high
polish of the Birds themselves.
At present I am very taken by the bird studies of Leonard Baskin - much
different style, but maybe the same spirit or soul.
Best,
Oscar
