Oscar,
No rumor, he did it and even then some of them fractured. You can see
the fracture on photographs of one in particular, the version in yellow
marble (if my memory serves me).
I don't know which version was the first one he began doing this way, but
all the stone versions had the rod inserted before the bird form was
fully carved down around it.
