Hi Clive,
What is 'standard'? A jaws chuck and smooth-ended masonry bits?
They will wear the chuck very quickly. Maybe you should consider
at least SDS+ drill bits, even SDS max for powering into marble,
granite & basalt. Probably means having to buy a new drill.
I know friends who have bought cheap ones at Cash Converters.
If you want to drill a series of holes all in the same plane,
mark a line around the plane on the block. As you drill the
first hole, imagine you are drilling towards the line on the
other side. You may need some visible marker or an assistant
holding a straight edge on the other side to start.
As successive holes are drilled, place lengths of dowel or
whatever you've got handy in the drill hole so they extend
the line of the drill hole outside the block. Use these
sticks or rods to visually align the remaining holes to the set plane.
Regards, Simon
