There is a company in Bath, UK which I think sells stone cutting
hammers and picks called Avery, Knight and Bowlers:

I remember when I worked at Canterbury Cathedral there is a
particularly interesting part of the 12C Caen stone Quire which shows
the original arcade from about c.1100 beside later work of c1175, the
former is always said to have been cut with a stone axe whilst the
latter is cut with a mallet and chisel. There is a obvious difference
in appearance. But I am not completely convinced by the theory. I feel
that the fine Anglo Saxon and early Norman sculpture and decoration I
have seen could not have been carved with an axe (even a very small
one!)
