Using stone in the presence of fire
Recently I built a stone wall with a built in shelf that the homeowner
wanted to use as an outdoor fireplace. He built one fire on it and some of
the stone exploded. The wall is built out of fieldstone and the shelf was
built out of bluestone. The bluestone seemed most affected. Now that I
think about it thoroughly, porous rock + heat = steam = pressure, which
would explain the exploding. Can rock be used directly with fire or do I
always have to work fire brick into the design somehow?

Jerry Carter
