Sounds like Valders stone, an extremely hard, white, gritty stone; when you
put a dry diamond saw to it sparks fly.
I have a copy of an 1898 book, Building and Ornamental Stones of Wisconsin
by E. R. Buckley, published by the state of Wisconsin; it's almost 550
pages, lists all the quarries, analysis of the stones, etc. Lots of similar
books were published around the country in that period, they did very
thorough analysis of available stone sources.
The books is still packed away, it will be at least 2 weeks till I can dig
it out, but you should be able to find it in libraries in Wisconsin.
