Valders Stone and blades
Hello Walter,
It's nice to see some feedback from you, I had no idea you were on this
list. I would really like to see this book that you mention some time. The
next time that I make it to Chicago I'll make an appointment with you. (I
have been meaning to do this for over a year now.) I have been to your
website on a few occasions and I have thoroughly enjoyed the view.
I have not heard the name Valders stone used before, but it may well be the
correct term. On occasions, when I cut dry, I actually get very little in
the way of sparks. When I use the German saw on it and my cut walks a bit, I
do get some sparks from the coring coming into contact with the stone from
time to time. The German saw blade that I am running currently has lost its
tension, it loves to walk. Most aggravating, I cannot wait until it is bald,
dead core on the wall.
Before anybody replies about proper diamond blade usage, I'll tell you that
I agree. I caught my "savvy" younger brother running this poor thing through
a tire. I yelled quite a bit but stopped short of putting a well deserved
lump on his head. I want to use it up, so I start really slow and run it
buried in the stone with the scatter shield all the way down. I inspect it
after every cut for segment and coring cracking.
I would not recommend that others do the same, it is foolish frugality and
quite dangerous. The last tensionless blade I had, I ran to destruction by
cutting buried as well. When it broke it shed a segment and a piece of
coring that measured 2" x 2". It jammed in the channel and stayed there
thank god. Had it come out somehow, it would have made a extremely deadly
piece of high speed shrapnel.
