Introducing myself - western MA slate carver
Hi All,
Jumping in to introduce myself since I just discovered this list. I'm a
newbie slate carver in western Massachusetts. I started in 2001 when I got
hooked after taking two workshops with RI gravestone carver Karin Sprague (
http://www.karinsprague.com < http://www.karinsprague.com/ > ).
I carve away in my spare time trying to get it right (my last year's
project: http://people.umass.edu/smadison/carvings/reap.html ) but still
struggle with sharpening my chisels. Also how to find the "right" types of
slate to work on. And sources of slate carving chisels. I'm certainly on
a huge learning curve out here by myself and miss having a mentor nearby.
Would appreciate any tips anyone can offer ranging from suppliers to ????
I'm particularly devoted to studying/reproducing lettering and imagery from
the 1600's - early 1800's gravestones and to that end am also a member of
the Association for Gravestone Studies ( http://www.gravestonestudies.org/ )
Sarah
