Daedeluslanthanien -- thanks for the hello. (A mouthful of a nickname!)

Yes, years earlier I had a good friend who was the blacksmith at Mystic Seaport
maritime museum. We had many good chats and now when I have occasion to visit
any forges it brings back good memories. My most recent visit was with a
master blacksmith up in Shelburne, VT, who was training two new apprentices: a
middle aged couple switching careers!

My great grandfather was a stone cutter from Westerly, RI (granite quarries and
my hometown). He also traveled to Albany, NY to do work on the state capitol.
My son and I were able to make a visit there several years ago to see the
evidence of the various carvers' talents. Was impressive and a delight to
think I was related to one of the contributors.

Tomorrow morning I'm off to an AGS graveyard tour of some historical sites in
western MA. Hoping to get some photos of more colonial stone images for future
carving projects. I've only recently started doing serious research about
colonial gravestone imagery so your knowldege may far outweigh mine but I'm
happy to chat.

Quoted text begins.Welcome Sarah,
Your letter caught my eye, I have been seeking a grave stone carver for some
time to swap knowledge with.
I learned something very interesting during my apprenticeship about old
stoneworkers, most of them have also mastered blacksmithing. Working with
tools that you have personally forged is very satisfying. You may want to
hunt up a local smith.
