Howdy - I've been lettercutting in slate for awhile now and have come
across some nice carving slates. I attended a lettering class with an
English lettercutter by the name of Tom Perkins in 2004 and the organizers
obtained 12"x12"x1" thick Winchester Black honed slate from
http://www.vermontstructuralslate.com/stone_profiles.htm
It was pretty good stuff to carve and did not have any of the metallic-like
inclusions I've seen in other slates. Here in VA we have black Buckingham
slate quarried near Richmond and it is as good as the Vermont slate. My
personal favorite is Black Brazillian slate I got at Rock & Tile in
Charlestown, WV. It has subtle rainbow hues in it and carves like butter.
Happy slate carving!
