why?
The reason for rejecting my memorial stone was stated as a matter of policy.
Apparently a little information was more dangerous than none, and in their
lithographic ignorance, the administrators extrapolated a few stories of
marble degradation in other cemeteries as justification for the fiat banning
all non-granite materials. (The folks in Danby, Vermont would probably have
a few things to say about that).
You will see plenty of marble in most American cemeteries that have a
history going back approximately 100 years or so, but if you look carefully
you will notice that most of them have marble monuments, mausoleums, etc. in
the older historic area of the cemetery. Generally, the more
contemporaneous areas are comprised of granite markers or monuments. While
it is certainly true that as a generic class of material granite will be
more durable and resistant to the elements, it is a sad deviation in a long
and rich tradition.

Chaz. Out of interest, did the cemetery give you any reason for their ban on
metamorphic stone, marble. Although it's uncommon, I have seen plenty of
marble headstones and statuary
in U.K. cemeteries.
