That was me. I took a workshop lead by him about 10 years ago at the
Mendocino Art Center. He's a good teacher, if you're interested in learning
direct carving. In fact much of what he taught us in the class is condensed
into this little film. I had forgotten what he said about working the
profile line which is so key.
If you are interested in direct carving, watch the film again. Pay special
attention to how he starts a piece. He is very adamant about utilizing
abstract principles of relationships and proportions to create a dynamic
basis for any subject. He called it scribbling in the stone. John is one of
the few people I've heard who could come up with a good description of how
one does direct carving.

Chris, thanks for sending this link. It got me inspired to get back to my
stones. I've been off for a while.
