Quoted text begins.Good Morning Everybody,
I'm getting back into my shop after a bit of time away, and am
trying to saw
some reclaimed slate (painted and used as dividers between
bathroom stalls
in an old building) into workable pieces. It is black and
about 1" thick,
but that's about all I know about it. Next, my father'n laws
circular saw with carbide blade that he uses to cut away
cement. > Do I need to go to a diamond blade for slate? > Any
advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated!

End of quote.
Karen. Are you absolutly sure that you are dealing with
slate.? Don't believe it should be that hard, although I suppose
it could be. When you say carbide saw blade are you refering to
a blade with teeth? or one of those carborundum fiber blades
made for masonry? If you are using the fiber type blade with
little success, try using it in a succession of shallow passes
instead of cutting the full depth at once. I often find that I
need to "walk" the blade into the stone with some of the more
compacted limestone I work with.
If all else fails, see if a local countertop fab shop will cut
it up for you.
