cutting slate
John,
This stone was reclaimed by an architect who called it slate, but probably
no more of an expert than I. As I finished sawing through this first small
piece I needed, and started to take a chisel to clean some of it up, I'm not
sure that it will be that good for carving either. After hitting with the
chisel, it takes a very shiny, almost metallic look to it, and also breaks
away through the layers kinda crumbly - reminds me of hard coal maybe. I
have to investigate with my chisel further...

"sparkly" stuff in it. Harder than the dickens, and some of the
sandstones, like the PA blue-green also have a slate like
appearence.
