cutting slate - corrugated iron (fwd)
Dear Karen,
It's not stone, sorry, it's rolled steel sheeting.
It is great for a fragment of salvage stone to have a provenance & a
history. The first 30 or so slate inscriptions I made were in old laboratory
benches from Adelaide University, some up to 3 metersx.610, heavily painted,
scarred by generations of use, & asociated with some distinguished
scientific names...Sir William & Sir Lawrence Bragg(who in 1915 jointly, as
father & son, won the Nobel prize for their work in X-ray crystallography) &
Sir Marcus Oliphant. I like to transmit as much of this as I can to my
clients, perhaps mythologizing the works a bit, for my pleasure &
theirs. Then when they're dining around the inscribed table in 30 years, they
can tell the stories.
Broken slate beds of billiard tables sometimes turn up at the
quarry workshop(when they've cut a replacement), usually Welsh stone I
think, great for house names.
The drought is breaking here, day after day of rain & cold wind has
kept me indoors, away from my work. So it goes...catching up on paperwork.
Ian.

Why not cut the blackboards with a tile cutting saw? They are readily
available
at Home depot, etc. Slate tile is quite commonly used for flooring. m frank
