Lime putty making.
Simon, There were definitely some problems with maintaining an even temperature using somewhat inconsistent firewood to burn the crushed limestone. The grate held b/w 100-180lbs of crushed limestone but soon melted in one of the burns. This is what eventually closed the kiln experiment down.We looked into a local foundry to pour a more durable grate but had already proved our point and left it as is.
Its getting more and more popular around here to have architects and consultants specify a good lime putty in restoration work. At the very least slaking autoclaved supply store bag lime over a min. of six months if enough advance notice is available.

End of quote.
Will, I burn and slake a small amount of limestone twice a year to demonstrate
to Stonemasonry students. We have access to a metal heat treatment kiln and
pottery kilns. The stone is cracked into coarse gravel, placed in a steel box
and heated to 1100 deg C overnight. We slake it in a steel rubbish bin, and
later store it under water in a large plastic wheelie bin. It's used for lime
mortar in training exercises.
I bought a 200 litre drum of lime putty from Westox, it's superior to hydrated
lime in mortar.
The man who started the lime industry in Australia was David Mitchell, a
Scottish stonemason and father of opera diva Dame Nellie Melba. The road in
Melbourne that runs between David Mitchell Lime kilns at Lilydale to his old
home is called "Melba Highway".
