Hi Edie, I hope that you've had a good summer! I carve a fair amount of
alabaster and really enjoy working with it. Most is soft but I have
some blue alabaster that's as hard as many marbles. I use power tools
like angle grinders and die grinders and plain old drills but hand tools
work as well, files, rifflers, etc. I find that alabaster fractures
quite a bit so I don't like to use hammer and chisel but others on the
list have told me I'm crazy. Maybe I am <g >. Obviously, your
experience depends on the type of alabaster you'll be carving. There is
a beautiful translucent Italian alabaster but I assume that you already
know about that. When it comes down to it, alabaster may be my favorite
carving stone. IIRC there should be quite a bit in the list archives on
carving alabaster. Have fun, g
