James,

Wire saws may not perform very well on plaster due to clogging. The
irony is that the material is too soft and clings to the blade. You may
run into problems using water to offset the problem because plaster is
slightly soluble and some of the harder setting plasters also contain
small salt admixtures that will migrate if it gets soaked. I wouldn't
invest in a wire saw until you see that it is going to work for you.
You might consider using a jeweler's saw. The stroke would be short on
a 2" subject but a wide variety of blades are available, ranging from
extremely cheap ones from India (see Ebay) that give passible service to
very tough and pliable ones from sources like Rio Grande.
