Hi Norman,

Quoted text begins.RE: " Do you think it is stone like the first one shown here [Arvo
Siikamäki]?"
End of quote.

It looked to me like the surface ripples were carved because the surface
seemed to be up above the 'sides' of the work rather than contained by
the sides . . . but without a more detailed photo our imagination has to
be
the judge!

It reminded me of several pieces I have seen in the past, in marble
and other materials including wood and cast bronze.

The Italian sculptor Alberto Vangi did a piece in 1978 called
DONNA SEDUTO SULLA SPIAGGIA
(Woman Sitting on the Beach) that is perhaps 30-inches wide overall,
and is made of several types of marble fitted together ?
the carving of the woman is a small white marble part (4" high or so)
of the overall design, the main part is a 'beach' made from bardiglio and

the 'lapping waves of the water' made from white statuario.

Although Vangi's woman is very stylized, the waves (though simplified to
accomodate the material) are right-on the money . . . just as Fukuoka's
piece seems to be!

Good Carving to You,
Don
