Subject: dust on gilding

Some time ago I was gilding, with gold and palladium leaf, some images
incised in black Italian slate. When it came time to sand the surface
to remove the excess leaf I did so under running water, nevertheless
the metal surfaces were dulled slightly. The fines from the slate
seemed to adhere to the metal and I could not remove them without
causing fine scratches to the leaf surface, no matter how gently I
swept the surface. The metal was dulled either through a very fine
layer of dust, or scratches after the dust was removed. I had hoped to
avoid having to put anything on the gold (it is very chemically
resistant after all) but now I wonder if one needs to seal it. The
gilding job had been allowed to set for a few days before I began to
sand so I assumed the size had cured completely. Any suggestions?
