introduction and question about rose quartz
Tom,
Like all quartz, individual crystals have a conchoidal (glassy) fracture, so you can
expect to have the kind of randomly oriented, sweeping breaks that you would get from
glass. If this large mass was made up of may small crystals, then you also have a lot
of individual boundaries between grains that are not well-joined to each other. On
top of that, even large single-crystal quartz often has small voids and inclusions
running through it that may cause a crack to deviate markedly. The only way to work
it is by cutting and abrasion. Drilling can also be used but only with the kinds of
tools used for ceramics or glass - usually diamond tipped.

shipping and trying again (with better tools) or would it be better to forget
about it?
