Subject:
Create cloth effect on surface of stone, with natural looking folds & wrinkles?
Hello,
I'm teaching myself how to do some traditional techniques, such as scroll
work and realistic looking cloth, with wrinkles, folds and bends in GA marble.
I am having difficulting creating the folds without damaging the stone. My
marble seems to be too large grained to allow for fine details. But even
taking the large crystal sizes into consideration, creating something flowing and
smooth is a real challenge (and so far, an impossibility).
Does anyone have suggestions or techniques to creating a nice flowing cloth
design? Should I focus more on drilling with different bit sizes? Are there
any books on this subject?
For example, what percentage of the work would be done with files vs chisels
vs electric tools?
So far, my process is to rough out the shape with a diamond blade electric
saw, then use point and flat chisels, then angle grinder, then a carbide tipped
drill for undercutting, and finally use files.
Precision and control over the tool/stone are my main problems. I have had
only moderate success with undercutting and creating "folds". At this point,
I don't see how the stone can even be polished. Once it is adequately shaped,
the polising with a wet sander/polisher will ruin the smooth effect.
Is this a techniqe that will require a lifetime of experience to learn, or
is it something I can learn myself with patience and hard work? Any ideas?
Thanks!
Tom
