Yes, a lifetime of experience would help . . . but one way that is less time consuming is to stop trying to do it all with power tools - go back to hand work where you have the most control.
Rubbing stones can be broken into small shapes and used to follow the contours that are so difficult to work with power tools. The work proceeds much more slowly, but that is always the compromise between speed and control.
