Quarries in Belgium - Traigneaux Marble Quarry
Michiel, I have a couple photographs of the Traigneaux Marble Quarry near
Philippeville, Belgium, on our web site that were originally published in
the December 1895 in "Stone" magazine. There might also be other quarries
in the area that you could check out.
In August 2004 there was an article about this quarry in "Duiken," a diving
magazine entitled, "Steengroeve Traigneaux." Included in the article is a
photograph of the quarry as it appears today, and the quarry is used as a
dive spot. Perhaps part of the stone is still accessible. This is the
only Belgium quarry I've come across so far. The first link below is the
magazine URL, and the second link are the photos of the quarry I named
above. Perhaps someone at the magazine is aware of more Belgium quarries
that are, hopefully, not filled with water or can refer you to someone who
knows about other abandoned Belgium quarries.
