Subject: New Pointing Machine

Hello Philippe,

I saw your post on the stone list for the pointing machine. It looks like a
great design. I already have a "standard" pointing machine from Milani.
But I do have to build an armature each time. Have you considered
engineering an adapter for the Milani machine which will work with your
adjustable armature device? Then selling the adapter and adjustable
armature only. I think you could get siginificant interest from sculptors
like me who would be interested in upgrading their current system but can't
justify buying a new pointing machine when they already have one.

As to your apology to the direct carvers:

After years of direct carving, I have recently learned to use the pointing
device. I don't see any "sin" in it. Some of the local sculptors here have
questioned the techinque with comments such as, "So the device does all the
work". But I remind them, they use rulers, calipers, tape measures and this
is just another measuring device. I thought pointing would make sculpture
much easier but found out I had to work, and think, and use my artistic
ability to a greater extent than in direct carving. Making a model is
already a practice of many direct carvers when attempting any
representational subject. The thing I was most surprised to learn, was how
well the process honed my carving skills. In direct carving you have plenty
of room to play with. Carving hundreds of points to within milimeters takes
real concentration and planning, proper use of tools, and skill. I am a
much better carver now and would recommend the process to anyone who wants
to reach a new level in techinque. I am confident when I return to a direct
piece, I will be able to sculpt it better than ever. No "sinner" here!

Best Regards,
John Halter
