Stone Jars
In the August issue of the magazine Archeology there is an article
about the Plain of Jars. Located in Laos, the Plain of Jars holds some
60 sites with large stone jars carved from sandstone, conglomerate,
coral and granite. Some weigh up to 14 tons. Some have lids. Most date
from 500 BC to 800 AD. It is thought that they may have served as
mortuaries. They look pretty impressive, but visiting them is a bit
hazardous as they are surrounded by untold tons of unexploded ordnance
left over from the war.
