Subject: Alabama Marble?

Is it Sylacauga? I've been to the recently reopened quarry there and was
very impressed with the marble, though have not carved it other than to sample
its hardness and strength. Lovely lovely stuff. They have a nearly pure
bone white they call a crema. The quarry is now owned by Sicilians I believe.

Was the quarry you visited the Alabama Marble Company near Fayetteville
which is about 10 miles west of Sylacauga?

Yes, the block of Alabama marble I have is Sylacauga marble. I bought it
from a crane operator who works for this quarry. He has perhaps an acre of scrap
in a field near his house - most is cut for architectural stone.
Apparently he is permitted to sell reject and said he could get me whatever size
blocks I wanted.

As a side note, a few miles away at a gravel quarry, there are perhaps 80 3
foot by 3 foot by 8 foot blocks of Sylacauga marble that were moved from one
of the original Sylacauga quarries when ownership changed. They are for
sale. Now if I just could figure out how to get one of the big blocks home with
me.
