Images of Japanes Hand Tools
Bill,
Thanks for the Japanese Hand Tool web site.
A few years ago I worked with a group of Japanes landscapers\stone men that
were restoring an old Japanes garden in Buffalo NY.
Their approach to stone cutting and carving and the tools they used were
very different from mine.
They gave me a handset that could not go back on the plane with them. It's
designed like a typical carpenters hammer, meant to be struck with another
hammer. One's hands are kept out of harms way, but I missed the loss of
touch and feel that I have when I'm holding a set in my hand.
I would use my set to remove large pieces of stone and minimize the point
work, while they would pitch gradually to a line and point extensivily.
East did met west, and with much hand gestures we came to understand each
other, but I don't think anybodies methods changed! The end result was
excellent.
Thanks,
George Graham
