quarry methods
Hello George,
Since we are on the subject... I try to buy marble that looks cut or has be
drilled and split. I have had some bad experience with rough faced stone.
Usually on a cut stone one or two sides has a "crust" on it. Sometimes it
is orange, yellow or reddish in color. And the first 1/8 inch under it can
be kind of sugary. I just grind this off and then get started but I have
wondered what causes this coloration. Has it been painted by the quarry for
identification? Is this a weathering of the stone because it has been
outside for or long time? Is it just a natural condition where the stone
broke from the quarry wall? Does it even matter?
I really look forward to someday visiting a real quarry to gain some of this
experience first hand.
Just wondering,
John Halter
