Abandoned Quarry in upstate NY
I'll get detailed directions to you in another email. For now I can tell
you:
It is about 10-15 miles closer to New York City than the Hunter Mountain ski
area. If you take the route from NYC to Saugerties NY (thruway) then Rte 23
towards Hunter Mtn, you turn left at the sign for Elka Park, and proceed on a
rural road to a parking area at a trailhead.
If you take the wrong trail you end up on the North and West side of the
mountains; but if you stay left you end up on the east facing side of the
mountain, looking towards the Hudson River and the Taconic Mtns in the distance (on
a clear day). The quarry is there.
The road that was used to take the stone directly downhill; down the east
side of the mountain, towards Saugerties, is long washed out, overgrown, and
impassable.
Now you can only get there on foot by hiking in from the trailhead to the
north.
I'll send some pics as attachments to your hotmail account; and a link to
the hiking trails website.
