Stone church 'shedding'
As usual, I don't know what kind of stone it is. It's dark gray in color,
with no banding, striations, or particles of any other material. Just solid
deep gray all the way through.
The stones that are dropping the pieces are in widely separated locations
ranging from low to quite high on the building's exterior. It seems obvious
that the cycle of freezing and thawing is causing the splitting.
I was just wondering if the work of masons has been known to generate fine
cracks that could allow the entry of water.
