some of you may be interested in the Stone Foundation's fifth annual
gathering, STONEWORK SYMPOSIUM 2005, will take place October 7-9 at
the Ohio University East campus in St Clairsville Ohio. information
about the event(s) is available at www.stonefoundation.org. the
schedule is not available there yet so I've pasted it below.
information about the speakers is available at the website too.
y'all come.

p.s. re the discussion on determining the soundness of stone,
presence of faults/fractures: I don't know if anyone's mentioned
this, but I remember reading that Michelangelo would soak a block
with water then watch as it dried out. cracks would absorb and
retain moisture and thus become apparent to the eye. but who knows
if that would work with stone that has been recently blasted?

good posts, William Woodard. about finding "wild" stone -
it might be noted that stones and boulders, large and small, found in
stream beds, even dry stream beds tend to be, like those sundered
from their subterranean repose, sounder specimens than the same sort
of stone exposed in the surrounding terrain. not only freeze/thaw,
but the daily expansion/contraction the material endures (especially
in the American southwest) is lessened underground, as Bill says, or
underwater.

interesting discussion too about pitching, texturing, bumping.
thanks to all who participated.
