Subject:
blasted stone
Greetings carvers, Being a novice and interested in regional marble I read
the posts on the Alabama marble blocks but I never saw an explicit
discussion of when "blasted stone" was likely to produce usable blocks
(never?). I certainly would consider going over a buying some of that
stone, especially because I usually carve small pieces (150lbs tops so
far). I normally "tap" stone and listen for the "ring" and also give it a
close visual examination. Let's say I buy a 1000 chunk of this stone, and
it looks good and has a good ring -- am I really likely to find that it
has fractures when I cut into it? I'm just looking for some advice here,
but a broader discussion of when such stone is usable would really help
those of us with less experience. TIA, g2
