Quoted text begins.Simon! "A picture is worth a thousand words!"
What is the tool? Is it a type of core sample tool?
I love the snake....Beautiful! ....and the paper towel!
End of quote.

Hi Elaine,

The diamond core drill (photo 21) is driven through a water-swivel attachment,
providing a central water feed. Craig Medson was cutting a series of 10-inch
holes through Helidon freestone, each one took about 30 seconds.

All of the work at the symposium is done with diamonds - blades, core drills,
velcro sanding discs. No guards, and lots of dust and mud.

Flush-mounted blades used without guards seem to be the handiest tool that I've
seen. They are being used to remove bulk material (leaving a flat face) as well
as finer shaping and grinding work.

The snake (photo 46) carved by Silvio Apponyi appears to be a scrub python
(Amethystine python - Morelia amethistina). Years ago, I spotted one crossing a
bush track in a Brisbane suburb - it was longer than the width of my ute (and
the track), fully 10 feet in length:

Have a look at some of Silvio's other works here:

(use the navigation buttons at the top of the page to scroll through his album)

I don't know about the paper towel (photo 29 ?). I hope to make another visit to
see how that one turns out.

Simon
